The FILM COLOGNE section is dedicated to the medium of artists moving image and was introduced at ART COLOGNE three years ago. With the special exhibition “A Goth Life”, this year’s edition of ART COLOGNE will show a compilation from artwork editions curated by and selected from Daata Editions.

A Goth Life is a selection of artist works that compiled together make a composite tale of our joyously soulless, self-reflective, insular, tension and angst ridden times. The use of the internet is our guide, confident, entertainment, mirror, window, general outlet and has created a real alternative social reality, with artists commentating on and providing a contemporary anthropology for this coming of age. This will play throughout the days of the art fair. A Goth Life is playing each day on a repeated cycle.

On Sunday January 15 at 12 noon (PST) on Untitled, Radio, Daata Editions Director, David Gryn will present sound works by artists Joachim Koester & Stefan A. Pedersen, Leo Gabin, John Skoog and Hannah Perry.

UNTITLED, RADIO – A live broadcast that takes the place of the customary program of conversations and talks, offering a unique roster of interviews, performances, curated playlists, and sound-based works.

UNTITLED, RADIO is organized by Director of Programming and Development, Amanda Schmitt with San Francisco Programming and Development Advisor, Juana Berrio.

UNTITLED, ART is an international, curated art fair founded in 2012 that focuses on curatorial balance and integrity across all disciplines of contemporary art. Untitled, Art innovates the standard fair model by selecting a curatorial team to identify, and curate a selection of galleries, artist-run exhibition spaces, and non-profit institutions and organizations, in dialogue with an architecturally designed venue. Since 2014 the curatorial team has consisted of Christophe Boutin, Omar López-Chahoud and Melanie Scarciglia. The inaugural edition of UNTITLED, SAN FRANCISCO will take place at the historic Pier 70 in the Dogpatch neighborhood, January 13 – 15, 2017.

THE WATTIS INSTITUTE for Contemporary Arts will build a temporary bar on-site at the fair, inspired by the Wattis Bar – an intimate gathering place designed by the artist Oscar Tuazon. The bar will serve as the hub for Untitled, Radio, as a site to host public programs, and a meeting place throughout the course of the fair.

With a title borrowed from a classic 1970s reggae song by Jamaican dj/singer Doctor Alimantado, this year’s short film program focuses on a selection of international artists who engage with music in a multitude of ways. All the films in this varied and exciting program demonstrate the power of music to attract an audience, keep it engaged, elicit suspense and tug at the heartstrings. Similar to classical symphony works, the order of the films builds up a crescendo to create an awe-inspiring magic derived from the works in their entirety.

Film: Art Basel announces details of its 2016 Film program in Miami Beach.

From November 30 through December 4, 2016, Art Basel will present a premier program of over 50 film and video works by some of today’s most exciting artists from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

Selected from the show’s participating galleries by David Gryn, Director of Daata Editions and Artprojx, this year’s program will include ‘Muxima’, the first film by Chilean-born artist Alfredo Jaar, as well as a silent film about music by Christian Marclay and a new work by Liliana Porter.

The program will also include short films by Edgardo Aragón, Ain Bailey and Sonia Boyce, Cabelo, Kudzanai Chiurai, Martin Creed, Keren Cytter, Kim Gordon, Rodney Graham, György Kovásznai, Rashid Johnson, Li Daiguo, Li Shurui, Jillian Mayer, Ana Mendieta, Haroon Mirza, Ara Peterson, Alex Prager, Anri Sala, Wilhelm Sasnal, Tromarama and Samson Young among many others.

Screenings will take place both in SoundScape Park on the 7,000 square-foot outdoor projection wall of the New World Center, as well as on dedicated touchscreen monitors within the Film Library at Art Basel’s show in the Miami Beach Convention Center.

In addition, Marian Masone, New York based film consultant and strategist, has selected ‘Maurizio Cattelan: Be Right Back’ (2016) directed by Maura Axelrod, for a special screening at the Colony Theatre on Friday, December 2.

Returning for his sixth year, curator David Gryn presents several works that engage with music, including a set of 28 short films screened under the title ‘Best Dressed Chicken in Town’ after a classic 1970s reggae song by Jamaican singer Doctor Alimantado.

The lineup focuses on a selection of international artists who engage with music in a multitude of ways. A ‘Double Bill’ program will pair two film works that share similar themes or approaches to an intense musical score: Rita Ackermann (b. 1968) and Christian Marclay (b. 1955) on Wednesday, and Liliana Porter (b. 1941) and Alfredo Jaar (b. 1956) on Friday.

The late screening on Thursday, December 1 will feature works by sound artist and DJ Ain Bailey (b. 1963), with Sonia Boyce (b.1962), along with pieces by Anna Grenman (b. 1984), Rashid Johnson (b. 1977), Alex Prager (b. 1979) and Penny Siopis (b. 1953).

The final presentation on Saturday, December 3 will include three early films by Polish artist Wilhelm Sasnal (b. 1972), in which he added visual accompaniment to enhance the aural experience, along with a recent work, in which the score directly drives the narrative, replacing spoken words.

Every evening, directly preceding the Film program, surround sound works by Ain Bailey, Zoë Buckman, A.K. Burns, Jonathan Montague, Molly Palmer and Susannah Stark will be presented on the state-of-the-art surround system in SoundScape Park.

In conjunction with the outdoor film screenings, over 50 works have been selected to be shown exclusively within Art Basel’s designated Film Library at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Visitors will be able to individually screen over 50 works by artists such as Stephen Dean, Edith Dekyndt, Maggie Lee, Gabriel Lester, Shelly Nadashi, Sophie Nys, João Vasco Paiva, Betye Saar, Jason Simon, Su-Mei Tse and Tuo Wang. The Film Library is accessible inside the fair halls on touch-screen monitors during show hours. Access with a show entrance ticket.

On Sunday, December 4 at 2pm, Art Basel’s Salon program will feature ‘The Artist as Composer’, a talk between the artists Rachel Manson, Molly Palmer and Susannah Stark, and Kathryn Mikesell, Founder of The Fountainhead Residency and Studios in Miami. The talk will be moderated by William Simmons, author, Hyperallergic, New York, with an introduction by Film and Sound curator David Gryn.

Elephant Magazine Interview with David Gryn on Daata Editions

Daata Editions launched in May 2015, presenting editions by 18 artists that were available to be acquired as downloads. Over one year on, Director David Gryn discusses their latest releases, and Daata’s role in an art world that is finally coming round to the digital. New works will be released as Frieze London kicks off this week.

Can you tell me a little about the latest artworks that you’ve released? 

We have released many new artworks over the last several months, on the site we now have over 65 artists and 350 commissioned artworks. Coinciding with the Frieze Art Fair we released new sets of artworks by Ed Fornieles, Ariana Reines, Daniel Swan, Artie Vierkant, a single work each by 6 New Contemporaries selected artists — Melanie Eckersley, Hannah Ford, Jasmine Johnson, Scott Lyman, Scott Mason, Abri de Swardt — and the Daata & Artspace commission Terrorist of Love by Keren Cytter, which will be the latest artwork that is free to download. We have also just recently released new artworks at Expo Chicago by: Larry Achiampong, Casey Jane Ellison, Rashaad Newsome, Tameka Norris, Saya Woolfalk and Gutter Records selects: Jake Chapman, Graham Dolphin, Joachim Koester & Stefan A. Pedersen.

What do you look for in the artists you work with?

We look for artists who have an interest in using a variety of digital mediums. Artists whose work we perceive will speak to and engage an audience who will primarily view the work via the website. We work with artists who are known to us via the art world ecosystem and artists who collaborate well. 

Are any new or young artists particularly exciting you right now?

I visit, tutor and lecture at many leading art schools and I am mightily impressed by recent encounters with graduates: Molly Palmer, Susannah Stark, Elliot Dodds, Jonathan Montague, Alice Jacobs, Anna Grenman, to name but a few. As Curator of Film & Sound for Art Basel at Miami Beach, I get to discover new artists all the time, as many leading galleries send me links to their artists’ work and submit them for the programming that I have been curating for the last 7 years.

We have launched a new section on Daata called ‘Curated’, and this is conceived to work with other voices in the artworks and introduce artists we may not have collaborated with or even heard of before. We have started this off with curator Katherine Finerty and her exhibition Reuse, remix, recode: Digital identity politics and the Power of PL►Y, from which she has now introduced artist Phoebe Boswell to the site.

We are interested in all generations of artists, it is just that the newer generations of artists use digital means as a (generalised) more natural process — but not exclusively. I am always excited by the artists that I am working with and the potential of those I do not know. 

Although in many ways you offer an alternative to the traditional physical gallery structure, have any particular galleries or institutions taken well to the concept of Daata Editions and provided strong support? Further to this, which spaces do you feel are really embracing the digital age?

We have had great support and collaborations with a variety of leading art fairs — NADA, Independent, Frieze, Expo Chicago, Chart — and these in turn bring us in direct parity and contact with the galleries that are selected for these fairs. There are galleries such as Arcadia Missa, Seventeen, Pilar Corrias, Bitforms, American Medium, Postmasters (to name just a few from the top of my head) who really get it and treat artists using digital mediums as equal to artists using any other medium. 

We have had great support from the Hammer Museum, Julia Stoschek Collection, Zabludowicz Collection and KIASMA Finland, all of whom have acquired most of the works that were released initially on Daata Editions. 

The digital world is constantly developing, have you found that Daata is required to evolve at a faster pace than other art platforms to keep up with this?

We set up Daata to be a platform to service artists who work with digital mediums and inherently the mediums will evolve and develop, but the internet is a rather established outlet so we see it as a hyper-normal method for display and distribution and are interested in propagating this. We are not really able to predict what future developments will sweep us all off our feet, but we believe we are perfectly placed to adapt and engage with whatever comes next. 

Developments in the dot com / internet development world are super fast. But I see our project as an equivalent to websites like the Guardian or the online record store Sounds of the Universe (also designed by our designers Studio Scasascia) that provide a platform for the distribution of information and downloadable music. We are always open to new methods of collaboration and technologies. 

We set up Daata to be an online equivalent of a gallery, but not trying to be a gallery. So we need to serve artists and audiences with a long term solution. We do not have a crystal ball on how the future will unpack, but we have informed instincts and these are how we can create solutions. The surprising fastest adopters of what we are trying to do are enlightened collectors, as they are often fascinated by the new, the innovative and the unexpected.

How has the relationship between art and digital development changed since Daata began? Do you have new challenges now?

In the short time since we started I have seen a move towards a greater desire for collaboration from potentially competitive or rival platforms. As we each have our own strengths and output I strongly believe that there has to be a wide array of similar platforms, much like there are similar galleries worldwide, as we can only ever have a finite capacity and indeed budget to commission and work with a limited number of artists at any time. 

Our challenge is not about the future, but about what is around us and how we can convey what we are doing to audiences and that they can have a relationship with the artworks we distribute and display. 

What do you see in the future for both Daata and the wider relationship between art and the digital? 

Simply that the conversation of and around art made with digital mediums will move onto the conversation about the artwork and the artist — the artist is paramount and that was always the purpose of Daata, to be a leading voice and example in the landscape of online distribution platforms — and that we will be joined by many other fantastic players and their voices.

From December 2 through 6, 2015, Art Basel will present a premier program of over 50 films and videos by and about artists selected under the title ‘Our Hidden Futures’. Screened on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall of the New World Center, the program is again curated by David Gryn, Director of Daata Editions and London’s Artprojx.

First-time Art Basel film curator Marian Masone, Senior Programming Advisor at the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York has selected the feature-length film ‘Troublemakers – The Story of Land Art’ (2015) by filmmaker James Crump for a special screening at the Colony Theatre on Friday, December 4.

Gryn’s program of film and video works, drawn from the show’s participating galleries, will include work by Ida Applebroog, Anna Barham, Breda Beban, Janet Biggs, Sue de Beer, Rineke Dijkstra, Tracey Emin, Barbara Hammer, Shirazeh Houshiary, Jaki Irvine, Anna K.E. & Florian Meisenberg, Jumana Manna, Howardena Pindell, Cauleen Smith, Catherine Sullivan, and Marnie Weber.

Every evening, in addition to the Film program, sound works by Sofie Alsbo, Alice Jacobs, Mariele Neudecker and Camille Norment will be presented on the state-of-the arts surround sound system in SoundScape Park, curated by David Gryn. In conjunction with the outdoor film screenings, over 80 works have been selected to be shown within a designated Film Library at the Art Basel fair, whose Lead Partner is UBS.

Returning for his fifth year with Art Basel, curator David Gryn’s selection of works for Film will explore the history and future path of moving image artworks. Framed under the title ‘Our Hidden Futures’, the lineup will highlight an international selection of emerging and established artists, encompassing a range of moving image works that illustrate the breadth of these various analogue and digital mediums.

On Saturday, December 5 at 2pm, Art Basel’s Salon program will feature ‘The Artists
Surround Sound Project’ a talk between Art Basel film curator David Gryn and the artists
Sophie Alsbo, Alice Jacobs, Mariele Neudecker and Camille Norment. Art Basel
entry tickets include admission to the Salon.

Miami Beach Convention Center Film Library

In conjunction with the outdoor program, over 80 selected works will be presented on six touch-screen monitors within the Film Library at Art Basel’s show during show hours. Access with a show entrance ticket.

Nightly (December 2 – 5)

SoundScape Park Evening Film Program

Outdoor screenings will take place in SoundScape Park on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall of the New World Center, a three-minute walk from the Miami Beach Convention Center. Admission to Film at SoundScape Park is free. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs.

Every evening from 6pm to the start of the first film screening, sound works by different artists, curated by David Gryn, will be presented in SoundScape Park: Weds, Dec 2: Mariele Neudecker / Thurs, Dec 3:  Sofie Alsbo / Fri, Dec 4: Camille Norment / Sat, Dec 5: Alice Jacobs. Free public access, seating is limited – bring a blanket or lawn chair.

Catherine Sullivan’s film, ‘Afterword Via Fantasia’, is conceived within the framework of an opera written by composer George Lewis and co-directed by Sullivan and longtime collaborator Sean Griffin. Sullivan transposes material from Lewis’s libretto into a series of scenes shot on sets for other plays with parallel and divergent social and cultural themes. The opera and film are based on Lewis’s widely-acclaimed book A Power Stronger Than Itself: The AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) and American Experimental Music. The AACM has long played a key role in American experimental music, forging new models of black identity and social activism.

Troublemakers – The Story of Land Art, 2015 unearths the history of land art in the tumultuous late 1960s and early 1970s. Focused on a cadre of renegade New York artists that sought to transcend the limitations of painting and sculpture by producing earthworks on a monumental scale in the desolate desert spaces of the American southwest, the film includes rare footage and interviews with artists such as Robert Smithson (Spiral Jetty), Walter De Maria (The Lightning Field) and Michael Heizer (Double Negative). The screening is followed by a panel discussion between the movie’s Director James Crump and Art Basel Film co-curator Marian Masone.

David Gryn

David Gryn is the founder and director of Daata Editions, a new online platform commissioning artists video, sound and web editioned artworks and director of London’s Artprojx, screening, curating, promoting and lecturing on artists’ moving image and other art projects, working with leading contemporary artists, art galleries, museums, art fairs, art schools and film festivals worldwide.

Marian Masone

Marian Masone is a film curator, lecturer and writer based in New York. For over 20 years Masone has worked at The Film Society of Lincoln Center, America’s pre-eminent film organization. She sits on the selection committees for two of The Film Society’s most prestigious festivals: ‘The New York Film Festival’ and ‘New Directors/New Films’, a co-production with the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Masone has been a guest lecturer and curator for leading institutions such as Parsons School of Design in New York and Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid. Her writings on film and media have appeared in many leading newspapers and magazines.
