To coincide with the opening of the 73rd Venice International Film Festival, Daata Editions and Zuecca Project Space collaboratively present Oh the Humanity, an exhibition of video works by Daniel Keller & Martti Kalliala, Takeshi Murata, Jon Rafman, opening at the Hotel Excelsior on Wednesday 31 August 2016, 6 – 9pm.

The exhibition opens a dimensional window from the world of cinematography and the recreation of reality, to the a realm of digital and virtual media, where the suspension of disbelief is heightened and the connection to the “now” all the more vibrant. The project aims to re-contextualize video and digital artwork by breaking out from the white-cube and into the “real-world”. Daata Editions‘ mission of creating/commissioning “democratic” art pieces, is fulfilled by confronting the general public with the work that in turn is assimilated into the environment and becomes part of a new concept of exhibiting.

FAD managed to grab a few minutes with the founder of Daata Editions David Gryn ahead of a very busy New York Art Week.

1 How’s it going at Daata?
Daata Editions has been very busy. We have had great acquisitions of all 18 artists in Season One: Ilit Azoulay, Helen Benigson, David Blandy, Matt Copson, Ed Fornieles, Leo Gabin, Daniel Keller & Martti Kalliala, Lina Lapelyte, Rachel Maclean, Florian Meisenberg, Takeshi Murata, Hannah Perry, Jon Rafman, Charles Richardson, Amalia Ulman, Stephen Vitiello, Chloe Wise – comprising 109 artworks – by the Hammer Museum in LA, the Julia Stoschek Collection in Düsseldorf, Zabludowicz Collection in London. We have been planning Season Two which has 157 artworks scheduled by 42 artists to be released over the forthcoming year and launching in May. We will be announcing the artists very soon and the art fair and venue partnerships.

2 What are you up to in New York?
As it is a major Art Fair week, it is great time to meet lots of colleagues in the city and serendipitously bump into others, for planning upcoming projects and collaborations. Fair’s include: Independent, Armory, Volta, Pulse, ADAA and Spring Break Art Shows and Moving Image Fair and more.

3 Is it easy to buy a Daata Edition?
The logic of Daata is as easy and simple and obvious as buying and downloading music online, but keeping it very clear that you are buying an artwork, with the artist remaining at the centre of the process.
The designers of Daata are Studio Scasascia who have also created the online platforms for music outlet Sounds of the Universe and Damian Hirst’s art e-commerce store Other Criteria.

Takeshi Murata, Tennis (2015). Courtesy the artist & Daata Editions.

4 Why seasons?
The season is really just to delineate a new artist commissioning cycle. It stemmed from thinking that the value of all past and current seasons, say on Netflix or Amazon Prime, remain strong and current.

5 Can you gift a Daata Edition?
Yes, it is very easy to gift artworks from Daata Editions. Easily done by giving their email address when you purchase the work.

6 Can you sell a Daata Edition?
Yes, simply transferring ownership via the website. We facilitate this and always hold the certificate of ownership, but we are not resellers and do not make added income from this process.

7 How do you select your artists?
Daata consider artists that this platform would be logical for and that we have been aware of in the artworld over time. The artworld eco-system operates via string recommendations of artists by other artists, curators, galleries, collectors we know.

8 What media do you sell?
They are downloadable MP4 and MP3 files.

9 Do you help with installation?
As Daata is so simple to use, there isn’t any need to help. Files are easily downloadable onto any digital screen device.
Try the free Jon Rafman, Oh the Humanity, 2015.

10 What’s next after New York?
Daata Editions is participating in an International New York Times conference in Doha, Art for Tomorrow and the inaugural Independent art fair in Brussels next month.

Daata Editions, the online platform for the sale of commissioned artist video, sound and web editions, is pleased to announce the third artwork release for Season One. The artworks will be available at http://daata-editions.com from 5pm on Monday 12 October with a special release event at the Daata Editions Lounge at the Zabludowicz Collection. The release coincides with the Jon Rafman and Charles Richardson shows opening at the Zabludowicz Collection.

Daata Editions was developed to enable audiences to view contemporary artists who are working in digital mediums, showing artworks made for, and therefore best viewable on, laptops, iPads, iPhones, screens and even cinemas. This new and innovative way to collect art is designed specifically to be a native platform to a new generation of artists who work with moving image and sound, and to empower artists, audiences and the marketplace in an area of artistic practice that remains underrepresented within traditional art market models.

For Season One, Daata Editions has commissioned 18 artists to create six new artworks each in editions of 20, with 15 going on sale to the public via the website and five others automatically put aside for philanthropy. All artworks last no longer than approximately three minutes and are made in ways that challenge traditional modes of exhibition, reception and, therefore, of collecting as well. Daata Editions artists commissioned for the Season One are: Ilit Azoulay, Helen Benigson, David Blandy, Matt Copson, Ed Fornieles, Leo Gabin, Daniel Keller & Martti Kalliala, Lina Lapelyte, Rachel Maclean, Florian Meisenberg, Takeshi Murata, Hannah Perry, Jon Rafman, Charles Richardson, Amalia Ulman, Stephen Vitiello, Chloe Wise.

David Gryn, Director of Daata Editions, said: “It is important that while we continue to find new artists whose work pushes the definition of contemporary art, we also develop formats through which such work can be best accessed and understood. We also need far more competition from similar platforms that commission, show and sell digitally made art online to empower artists, audiences and the marketplace alike.”

In addition to the commissions available for purchase, all subscribers to the platform receive a free Jon Rafman artwork, made specifically for Daata Editions.

Artprojx presents
The Miami and Moscow Film Selections
Artist Sound of Film
curated by David Gryn

with a Miami Moscow Mix playlist by Max Reinhardt

Friday 12 September 8.30pm

Bermondsey Project, 46 Willow Walk, London. SE1 5SF

The films selected are highlights of works that were originally selected and curated by David Gryn for the Film programme at Art Basel in Miami Beach over the last 4 years. The films were all played on the New World Symphony Center’s screening wall in Soundscape Park during the annual art fair. This selection was played outdoors in Moscow as part of the Museum Nights in May 2014 along with DJ Max Reinhardt.

These works all engage with music, rhythm and sound and remain resonant from their initial playing. They all have a power that is far beyond just the work, one that creates lingering memory with the viewer long after the work has been seen and finished. The selection of these was driven by their sound, engagement and that the language needed to digest these works is that of audio-visual. These works reflect on the current trends and modes of communication such as YouTube, TV, animation, gaming, social media and used to create new images, sounds and unexpected connections.
