Rebel Souls is the artists video and sound program for MIRA at Art Rio, curated by David Gryn, Daata Editions with sonic accompaniment from Max Reinhardt, musician, DJ and presenter of BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction.

Rebel Souls used as its artwork selection inspiration – artworks, sounds and ideas that emanated from the rebellious and radical zones of the 1970’s – from the discordant sounds and vision of the Female Punk Artists and the rhythms, anthems and spirit of Tropicalia. Like previous projects in Moscow, Miami and London, the Gryn and Reinhardt collaboration takes the form of an artist’s moving image curated compilation, using the music and sound within the artworks as a catalyst for developing a soundscape filled with music and sonic interventions that reflects on the selected artist video program.

David Gryn, Sound and Technology Curator, about If So, What?

“I think about audience as much as I think about how to support artists.” Says David Gryn, who is speaking with me in the lead up to the opening of Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB) about curating film programs, his thoughts on the upcoming fair in Miami, and his new role as Technology and Sound Curator for If So, What?. Gryn, who is Director of Daata Editions and Artprojx, is also going into his 7th year as curator for film and sound for ABMB, and is a renowned expert in the field of film, digital media, and sound curation.

Right now, Gryn is hard at work for ABMB, which opens this week. This year’s program takes as its theme the universal language of dance, and explores the relationship between music and movement. The program will include three films by artists Jibade-Khalil Huffman, Jen DeNike and Tin Ojeda, as well as a series of short films presented by the Chicago Film Archive in collaboration with Chicago-based gallery Corbett vs. Dempsey.

“The goal,” said Gryn, who has dedicated his career to elevating and creating a platform for film and digital art, “is to encourage galleries to show the mediums that they don’t really bring to art fairs or find easy to sell. And the result is that it often raises the profile of the work and the medium.”

For the sound component of the program, Gryn is working with artist Hans Berg to program surround sound in the 160 speakers in SoundScape park, part of New World symphony. The sound element was a component that Gryn introduced into ABMB a few years ago, and which runs each evening before the film programming begins.

One of Gryn’s favorite aspects of the program is that the film and sound portion of the fair is open and accessible to everyone. “At the screenings there’s a big mix of huge art collectors, homeless people, and families from Miami,” said Gryn. “They are all equal to me; that mix is interesting to me. I’m trying to be accessible to as many people as possible.”

Gryn is in the business of empowering and providing a platform for artists. He is the Director of Daata Editions, a platform that he developed with art collector Anita Zabludowicz. Daata Editions commissions artists’ video, sound, poetry, and web-based works, and makes them available for purchase by museums, fairs, hotel brands, and private collectors, among others. But as a curator, and someone who ultimately wants to see these artists make a living, he is also in the business of audience engagement.

“When I view an audience I am always looking at how they are engaging with the work. I think if I’m not doing the right thing it’s not always good for the artwork.”

For Gryn, his commitment to curating film and creating a platform for artists working in video and digital mediums to present their work serves a larger mission. “I am trying to empower a medium, to make sure there is a marketplace connectivity,” said Gryn.

Working with If So, What? is a natural fit for Gryn, who said that he is very excited to be working with and supporting an innovative new art event. “We have a mutual belief in supporting the artists, in being honest, truthful, and diligent about how we operate with artists.”

In addition, Gryn sees Silicon Valley as an interesting new frontier. “I think there is a change going on and a growing interest in art. It was hitherto dominated by the dot com sensation, but I think that has moved on and people are becoming interested in other ways of being,” said Gryn. “The art gold rush is starting to take place, and people think there is more opportunity on the West Coast to gain traction. Being supportive of a new art fair model excites me.”

With regards to his plans for If So, What, Gryn is still holding his cards close. He is planning to work with some of the artists that he has commissioned for Daata Editions, as well as to collaborate with artists and designers that he has been interested in partnering with, some of whom are working in virtual reality, and others who are experimenting with new and unconventional surfaces on which to display video work. He is also interested in drawing on themes relevant to the Bay Area, from the South Bay’s long connection to the tech industry, to San Francisco’s history as a hub for LGBTQ communities.

Part of Gryn’s mission is to help communicate the medium of film as an artwork, which an event like If So, What? provides a perfect opportunity to do. “I’m trying to delineate that this is an artwork more than anything,” says Gryn. “Boundaries are becoming ever more blurred and I’m trying to make sure that the boundaries are at least acknowledged. The function of art is itself. It is not a marketing tool to sell something. It is nothing other than to be itself.”

Ultimately though, it is always about the artists, and Gryn is committed to helping them along – by elevating their medium and creating a perfect forum for audiences to engage with their work.

“Artists are leaders of cultural thought, of intellectual thought, and they are often undervalued and under-looked. Even at art fairs things get forgotten, which is why I’m excited by a new fair that thinks about artists in a different way.”

Saya Woolfalk is a New York based artist who uses science fiction and fantasy to re-imagine the world in multiple dimensions. With the multi-year projects No Place, The Empathics and ChimaTEK, Woolfalk has created the world of the Empathics, a fictional race of women who are able to alter their genetic make-up and fuse with plants. The FILM COLOGNE section is dedicated to the medium of artists moving image and was introduced at ART COLOGNE three years ago. With the special exhibition “A Goth Life”, this year’s edition of ART COLOGNE will show a compilation from artwork editions curated by and selected from Daata Editions.

A Goth Life is a selection of artist works that compiled together make a composite tale of our joyously soulless, self-reflective, insular, tension and angst ridden times. The use of the internet is our guide, confident, entertainment, mirror, window, general outlet and has created a real alternative social reality, with artists commentating on and providing a contemporary anthropology for this coming of age. UNTITLED, RADIO – A live broadcast that takes the place of the customary program of conversations and talks, offering a unique roster of interviews, performances, curated playlists, and sound-based works.

UNTITLED, RADIO is organized by Director of Programming and Development, Amanda Schmitt with San Francisco Programming and Development Advisor, Juana Berrio.

UNTITLED, ART is an international, curated art fair founded in 2012 that focuses on curatorial balance and integrity across all disciplines of contemporary art. Untitled, Art innovates the standard fair model by selecting a curatorial team to identify, and curate a selection of galleries, artist-run exhibition spaces, and non-profit institutions and organizations, in dialogue with an architecturally designed venue. Since 2014 the curatorial team has consisted of Christophe Boutin, Omar López-Chahoud and Melanie Scarciglia. The inaugural edition of UNTITLED, SAN FRANCISCO will take place at the historic Pier 70 in the Dogpatch neighborhood, January 13 – 15, 2017.

THE WATTIS INSTITUTE for Contemporary Arts will build a temporary bar on-site at the fair, inspired by the Wattis Bar – an intimate gathering place designed by the artist Oscar Tuazon. The bar will serve as the hub for Untitled, Radio, as a site to host public programs, and a meeting place throughout the course of the fair.

DAATA EDITIONS commissions artist video, sound, poetry and web. This new and innovative way to collect art is designed specifically to be a native platform to a new generation of artists who work with moving image and sound. Limited edition artworks can be viewed and acquired as digital downloads.

David Gryn: Sound and Vision

Returning to curate the Art Basel Miami Beach Film program for a sixth year, David Gryn explains why music has inspired his choices, and how audiences can catch a glimpse of the ‘Best Dressed Chicken in Town’.

Each year, as evening darkens the skies over Art Basel Miami Beach, visitors gather on the lawns of SoundScape Park to experience video works from some of the world’s most exciting artists. Sharing picnics, drinks, or simply being absorbed by art, they sit beneath the towering 7,000 square foot projection wall of the New World Center as it displays a program of films carefully chosen by curator David Gryn.

“My selections are quite instinctive,” says Gryn. “I am often attracted by artworks that affect me like music does; a thud in my chest, reverberations through my body, tingles down my neck and spine.” Fittingly then, music is the theme of this year’s program. “As [the New World Center is] a concert venue, music is inherent to the place we show the work and contextually it has a strong resonance. Asking galleries to submit films which engage with music in some way felt like a natural choice.”

Through this year’s theme, Gryn hopes to create a larger-than-life show to excite and engage the broadest possible audience. “Music is something universal. When you have dialogue in a certain language, you often exclude people outside it. Music, like art, crosses that divide – a sort of abstract language that has its own voice and says something about the human condition.”

Be enveloped by art

The program includes a set of 28 short films screened under the title Best Dressed Chicken in Town. “This was named after the 1970s reggae track by Doctor Alimantado, which has long inspired me. The idea behind it was to combine artworks using music and sound which, over the program’s two hour span, swell to a crescendo,” Gryn explains. And though he will not be drawn on a favorite this year (“I picked them, so they’re all my favorites!”), he singles out Terrorist of Love by Keren Cytter as being a film which never fails to make him smile, while Wilhelm Sasnal’s Kiss is “utterly wonderful.”

In addition to the screening of films, this year also heralds the third edition of Surround Sound, a specially commissioned program of sound works designed to take full advantage of SoundScape Park’s 160 speaker surround sound system. “I view my role as that of a facilitator. I aim to serve the artwork, the artist, and the gallery well by presenting pieces which will have the most resonance with the audience in the setting that we have.”

The communal act of experiencing art in this way is something special, says Gryn. “You get a sense of excitement, something you can palpably feel. You really do see an audience being enveloped by art. That’s what this platform achieves – and it encourages galleries, their artists, and a wider audience to take time with mediums that often don’t get much of a look in at events like this. There’s not another experience quite like it in the context of an art fair. Period.”

With a title borrowed from a classic 1970s reggae song by Jamaican dj/singer Doctor Alimantado, this year’s short film program focuses on a selection of international artists who engage with music in a multitude of ways. All the films in this varied and exciting program demonstrate the power of music to attract an audience, keep it engaged, elicit suspense and tug at the heartstrings. Similar to classical symphony works, the order of the films builds up a crescendo to create an awe-inspiring magic derived from the works in their entirety.

Film: Art Basel announces details of its 2016 Film program in Miami Beach.

From November 30 through December 4, 2016, Art Basel will present a premier program of over 50 film and video works by some of today’s most exciting artists from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

Selected from the show’s participating galleries by David Gryn, Director of Daata Editions and Artprojx, this year’s program will include ‘Muxima’, the first film by Chilean-born artist Alfredo Jaar, as well as a silent film about music by Christian Marclay and a new work by Liliana Porter.

The program will also include short films by Edgardo Aragón, Ain Bailey and Sonia Boyce, Cabelo, Kudzanai Chiurai, Martin Creed, Keren Cytter, Kim Gordon, Rodney Graham, György Kovásznai, Rashid Johnson, Li Daiguo, Li Shurui, Jillian Mayer, Ana Mendieta, Haroon Mirza, Ara Peterson, Alex Prager, Anri Sala, Wilhelm Sasnal, Tromarama and Samson Young among many others.

Screenings will take place both in SoundScape Park on the 7,000 square-foot outdoor projection wall of the New World Center, as well as on dedicated touchscreen monitors within the Film Library at Art Basel’s show in the Miami Beach Convention Center.

In addition, Marian Masone, New York based film consultant and strategist, has selected ‘Maurizio Cattelan: Be Right Back’ (2016) directed by Maura Axelrod, for a special screening at the Colony Theatre on Friday, December 2.

Returning for his sixth year, curator David Gryn presents several works that engage with music, including a set of 28 short films screened under the title ‘Best Dressed Chicken in Town’ after a classic 1970s reggae song by Jamaican singer Doctor Alimantado.

The lineup focuses on a selection of international artists who engage with music in a multitude of ways. A ‘Double Bill’ program will pair two film works that share similar themes or approaches to an intense musical score: Rita Ackermann (b. 1968) and Christian Marclay (b. 1955) on Wednesday, and Liliana Porter (b. 1941) and Alfredo Jaar (b. 1956) on Friday.

The late screening on Thursday, December 1 will feature works by sound artist and DJ Ain Bailey (b. 1963), with Sonia Boyce (b.1962), along with pieces by Anna Grenman (b. 1984), Rashid Johnson (b. 1977), Alex Prager (b. 1979) and Penny Siopis (b. 1953).

The final presentation on Saturday, December 3 will include three early films by Polish artist Wilhelm Sasnal (b. 1972), in which he added visual accompaniment to enhance the aural experience, along with a recent work, in which the score directly drives the narrative, replacing spoken words.

Every evening, directly preceding the Film program, surround sound works by Ain Bailey, Zoë Buckman, A.K. Burns, Jonathan Montague, Molly Palmer and Susannah Stark will be presented on the state-of-the-art surround system in SoundScape Park.

In conjunction with the outdoor film screenings, over 50 works have been selected to be shown exclusively within Art Basel’s designated Film Library at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Visitors will be able to individually screen over 50 works by artists such as Stephen Dean, Edith Dekyndt, Maggie Lee, Gabriel Lester, Shelly Nadashi, Sophie Nys, João Vasco Paiva, Betye Saar, Jason Simon, Su-Mei Tse and Tuo Wang. The Film Library is accessible inside the fair halls on touch-screen monitors during show hours. Access with a show entrance ticket.

On Sunday, December 4 at 2pm, Art Basel’s Salon program will feature ‘The Artist as Composer’, a talk between the artists Rachel Manson, Molly Palmer and Susannah Stark, and Kathryn Mikesell, Founder of The Fountainhead Residency and Studios in Miami. The talk will be moderated by William Simmons, author, Hyperallergic, New York, with an introduction by Film and Sound curator David Gryn.
