PRESS RELEASE:

Verbier 3-D Presents ‘Mutations’: 27 July 2013

On the 27th of July 2013, Verbier 3-D presents ‘Mutations’ in Verbier. The event epitomises 3-D’s appetite for innovation, with artists at the forefront of influencing and changing the shape of contemporary art globally. As well as a photographic exhibition at Médran Ticket Office (from the 20th of July to the 4th of August), there will be an Artists Talk on the 27th of July inviting the public to listen to the guest artists discuss their interpretation of the theme of ‘Mutations’ and how they express it in their art.

Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky: That Subliminal Kid and David Gryn, Founder of Artprojx will be joined by Sanford Biggers, eminent artist and Assistant Professor at Columbia University’s Visual Arts program and Kiki Thompson, Chief Executive and co-founder of Verbier 3-D. The talk will be moderated by Verbier 3-D’s Curatorial Director, Paul Goodwin.

David Gryn will screen a selection of videos from acclaimed artists after the talk at Place Medran. Later in the evening at Pub Mont Fort, Verbier, Paul will collaborate with David to deliver a cutting edge music and art video performance with an appearance from Crista Kende, violist in the Verbier Festival Orchestra performing with DJ Spooky. Paul is currently the Artist in Residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The event will also see the launch of the ‘Ship of Tolerance’ exhibition, http://www.shipoftolerance.org, a 3-D collaboration with Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, celebrated as Russia’s premier contemporary artists. Paintings from children from the Val de Bagnes on the theme of tolerance will become the sails of the Ship that will be displayed in New York at the Dumbo Arts Festival. Verbier 3-D is supporting Swiss junior pianist, Fanny Monnet, who will play at the exhibition opening in New York and in Moscow at the other ‘Ship of Tolerance’ exhibition this year. The children’s work will be exhibited in Verbier before being sent to New York and returning to Verbier for next year’s ‘Ship of Tolerance’.

This is the start of a new biennial creative cycle for Verbier 3-D. Building on its immense success to date, it enables more high profile collaborations with leading contemporary artists which culminate in the next artists’ residency in 2014. Kiki Thompson, Chief Executive and Co-Founder of 3-D said, ‘We’re very excited to invite these world-class artists and curators to Verbier. ‘Mutations’ continues in 3-D’s tradition of crossing boundaries and creating a space for art and ecology to meet in the museum without walls. We’ve created an experience that combines art, learning, space and landscape. It is not restricted by age, only by the viewer’s imagination.’ Find out more about the event at the 3-D Foundation website www.3-dfoundation.com or email kthompson@3-dfoundation.com.

The poetics of mountains, their mutations and multifarious things is a reflection on the place of this screening and how an audience engages with it’s own reflection.

A programme of mountain, snow and mutation inspired and related films. The selection includes artists’ films and videos that explore how we see and react to the world via the imagery, aesthetics, icons of mountains, snow, ice and indeed their ever-ending mutations. This reflects back on the location and creates a landscape of works that feel as though they belong and are at home in Verbier.
