Dara Friedman 'Dancer' - Gavin Brown enterprise

Artprojx and David Gryn have just returned from the very successful collaborative project with Art Basel Miami Beach 2011 selecting and curating their Art Video programme.

The screenings were on the 7000 sq ft wall of the Frank Gehry designed New World (Symphony) Center in SoundScape Park next to the Miami Convention Centrer. With its 35000 lumen projector and 186 speakers sound system.

We also programmed 5 wooden designed pods in the centre of the fair – where visitors watched a selection of the films curated. These were full with viewers for the duration of the fair.

There were 3 evenings of public screenings – where everyone was welcome from local homeless people to the very supportive Rubell family.

Dara Friedman’s Dancer was a highlight  – as it touched on so many buttons. It was a premiere of a film made in Miami, by a resident Miami based artist, with over 66 Miami based dancers in the film. It was also always the artist’s ambition for the work to feature on the exact spot I was selecting for – unbeknownst to me. And most importantly – the work is exceptional, and was ideal for this project. Dara felt that the sound was better than she could have imagined, and her gallery Gavin Brown enterprise – was happy as Larry (who ever he may be !).

I also interviewed her for the Art Basel Miami Beach organised Art Salon series – where we were in conversation, and it all added to my greater knowledge of her and her work – and through this process I have determined that she is a sensational artist.

All 6 of the screenings had between 300 and 600 viewers at any one time. We had the multi-coloured Fatboy cushions that made the whole experience very comfortable – for locals, art world and indeed a very varied audience. Artprojx usuallly works in cinema contexts and this worked very well too – with the audience maintaining interest and focus over the 2 hours each evening – even when some of the work was slow and not of immediate impact.

Art Video features film and video works by today’s most exciting international artists, presented by the galleries of Art Basel Miami Beach. Organized in association with London’s Artprojx, Art Video will be screened for the first time in the SoundScape Park, on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall of the New World Center, as well as within five viewing pods inside the Miami Beach Convention Center.

The ‘Landscape’ program brings together film and video works with a literal or figurative take on its theme. Each work will take viewers on a curious journey to extraordinary places and unpossessed landscapes.

9pm  Dancer (25′ – screened twice)
The latest film by Miami-based artist Dara Friedman, ‘Dancer’ turns Miami’s street corners into a stage. Filming its performers from a slow-moving van and simultaneously transmitting an upbeat soundtrack into various neighborhoods, passersby appear to be breaking into dance.

Friday  December 2
8pm  Americania — Total running time approximately 42′
Setting the scene for ‘Americania’ in Miami Beach, the selection of short films was inspired by Martha Rosler’s one-minute film ‘God Bless America.’ The program offers a distinctive window onto the United States and the multi-faceted reactions towards the country by various artists.

9pm Music and Dance — Total running time approximately 40′
The program consists of a selection of films that play on the themes of music and dance, mesmerizing and capturing its audience. The videos share a simplicity, a joie de vivre and an engagement that allow the viewer to observe the ordinary through extra-ordinary means.

Saturday  December 3
8pm  Painterly — Total running time approximately 55′
This program combines film, animation, sculpture and painting in an intriguing way. The vigorous artists’ gestures correspond with the fluid wonders of digital technology.

9pm  Brief Features — Total running time approximately 73′
Brief Features presents works that hold the tension, visual captivation, imagination and quality of a full-length arthouse movie, and then offers a little bit more.

Location: New World Center, SoundScape Park, 500 17th Street, Miami Beach

Dancer documents a series of dances that took place on the streets of Miami this past Spring. In the film, the performers have two dance partners: the camera and the city. The dancers, over 60 in all, represent a range of styles and ages – classical, street, ethnic and improvised. Movement was developed with choreography for and with the camera in hand. The work is in black and white, filmed with a hand-cranked Bolex in Super 16mm. The camera allows itself to be led the film frame delineating the parameters of the stage and the barrel lens sometimes catching the movement merely out of the corner of its eye. Performances are enmeshed with the soundtrack which paces the film throughout its 25 minute running time.

Dancer is the most recent film in an unofficial trilogy of new works by Friedman that focus on performance and public space. In 2007, the Public ArtFund commissioned Musical 2007-2008, which captured spontaneous actions orchestrated across Manhattan. Musical similarly plays upon the vitality of city life where unexpected encounters can be a daily occurrence.

In 2009, Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt commissioned Friedman to create a performance as part of the exhibition “Playing The City”. Frankfurt Song, 2010, asked the city’s array of street musicians to interpret the Rolling Stone’s 1969 hit song “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”. The performance and subsequent film takes a snapshot of the city and makes a point of highlighting the endless renaissance of its people, places and politics.

ARTPROJX CINEMA: This exciting Artprojx Cinema project is the first major collaboration with Art Basel Miami Beach. We had 250 artist works submitted from over 200 of the selected galleries into the Fair.  This has enabled the galleries to screen films by artists they represent in this great outdoor cinematic setting. Malade au Printemps 2010

The Anatole Notes project consists of assembled groupings of paintings, objects, paper and letterpress text. Each assemblage reflects on the unfinished fragmented poems ‘pour Anatole un tombeau’ by Stephane Mallarme (1879), ‘a tomb for Anatole’ translated by Paul Auster (1983).

These fragmented phrases are Mallarme’s attempt to come to terms with the death of his eight year old son Anatole. Paul Auster comments;
  ‘this is one of the most moving accounts of a man trying to come to grips with modern death, that is to say death without God.’
As a major symbolist poet, Mallarme was interested in Art reflecting upon an emotion or idea rather than representing the natural world. He believed;
  ‘the sensation becomes the truth, not the time and place’. 
He made many collaborations with artists of other disciplines e.g. Manet, Whistler, Munch, Debussy, Zola and Verlaine. The sound of Mallarme’s poems were as important and sometimes more important than the meaning. His most famous poem ‘un coup de cles’ was a major influence on hypertext. His use of the blank space and careful placement of words and punctuation on a page allowed non-linear and consequentially visual readings of the text.
In Mallarme’s pursuit for the ‘oeuvre pure’ he deduces that:
  ‘having found nothingness, I have found the beautiful’.
In the Anatole texts, it is apparent that Mallarme felt the inadequacy of words to translate the enormity of emotion he felt for his son’s death.

My reflections upon his texts attempt to combine the written words with visual equivalents to reveal the expansive meaning of the text. Each work consists of three or four painted objects arranged on the wall and floor; they are made of various materials e.g. wood, linen, paper, metal, oil paint and readymade chairs. The Mallarme text has been hand letter-pressed onto paper or linen by New North Press.

This exciting Artprojx Cinema event brings together two very different art world projects in a great late night screening ‘Double Bill’ programme. The International galleries presenting these artist’s work are all featuring at this year’s Frieze Art Fair 2011. This has enabled the galleries to screen films by artists they represent in the great cinematic setting and at the home of Artprojx Cinema, The Prince Charles Cinema, in London’s Leicester Square.

In Europe, Popeye’s copyright expired on January 1, 2009, which means his likeness can be used in comics, on clothing, and elsewhere without authorization from the copyright holder—but only in Europe, where the law protects copyright for seventy years following the author‘s death (E.C. Segar, who first drew the spinach-guzzling sailor in 1929, died in 1938). In the United States, however, copyright stands for ninety-five years after it is first registered, so uses of Popeye will have to be registered through 2024. The discrepancy in US and EU law has created an odd situation where geography determines legal constraints on the production of highly mobile images.

Takeshi Murata wasn’t aware of the copyright issue when he began working on I, Popeye (2010), but it highlights the contradictions that interest him: the possibility of “unauthorized use” with images that are as deeply embedded in the popular consciousness as a song like “Happy Birthday.” Here, Murata twists a cartoon of heroic triumph into a litany of failure—the opposite of what Disney does when adapting a tale that, in the Grimms’ telling, doesn‘t end happily. The halting, minor-key version of the Popeye theme song in Devin Flynn and Ross Goldstein‘s soundtrack and the leering, moneyed Popeye pictured on the anti-hero‘s T-shirt—a caricature of pop-culture icon as commodity—are two details that contribute the video‘s effect. But the key factor is the medium itself. By rendering the characters in the kind of slick three-dimensional animation commonly associated with big-studio production, Murata intensifies and complicates the discrepancy between the official Popeye and his own “folk” version. Murata born (b. 1974, Chicago, IL, USA) lives and works in upstate New York. He received his BFA in film/video/animation from RISDI. His work has been shown widely in gallery and museum exhibitions in Europe and Asia and is included in the permanent collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington DC and the DESTE Foundation of Contemporary Art in Athens, Greece. Murata has developed painterly techniques for processing video using glitches and errors. Conjuring digital turbulence from broken DVD encoding, he carefully tends bad video compression to generate sometimes sinuous, sometimes violent flows of digital distortion. With a powerfully sensual force that is expressed in videos, loops, installations and electronic music, Murata’s synesthetic experiments in hypnotic perception appear at once seductively organic and totally digital.
